Graciously Accepted

Knowing that we have a hard time as it is with life, it is understandable that kids feel the burden and pressure from school mates about themselves or their parents. Our particular preference to life can affect our kids, simply because kids (and teachers) are cruel, and unfortunately it is still not uncommon to find bullies in the schools.

So how do kids tell their friends, and hope while doing it, that they will be accepted "as is?" Helping your children to understand that everyone is equal is a big start right at home. For kids who have been in the family since birth, it's easier. But for those who are in families that are suddenly combined it can be very difficult to accept and be accepted as they are.

Today, many schools have instilled a bully plan. Students become the mandated reporters. After all, who knows about the bully unless someone is told? Students, even those stand by, are told they are to report any bullying, no matter how minor.

Another way to help your child be accepted is to tell them not to pretend to be something they aren't. No one likes a liar as it is, and pretending they are something else will only make the situation. Not only will they receive ridicule for their family, but for being a "fake" or a liar. Kids can be cruel, but the false life can be the worst thing your child can do to fit in.

Popularity and labels are rulers of high schoolers. The captain of the cheerleading squad is expected to be flawless, and for your open minded child, this could mean torture. The quarterback of the football team may be the first one to call your precious one a loser, while managers and players knock them down emotionally. Gay bullying has been a problem, but with the coming out of Equal Opportunity, it has only recently been recognized.

Talk with your kids. Keep an open and honest relationship with them. Be sure that they know you are their for them, not just as mom or dad, but as a great ear and shoulder even when they think that they don't need it.
